Upon the invitation of Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, Mayor of Vientiane Capital, the Mayor of Budapest István Tarlós and his delegation paid an official visit to the Lao PDR on 21-24 June 2016. Following the talks with his Laotian partner, the Mayor had a meeting with H. E. Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith and H. E. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Lien Thikeo. The Mayor of Budapest paid a courtesy call to H. E. Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith as well.
The two Mayors signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the capitals that shall serve as the basis for future cooperation in the areas of water management, transport development, communal waste treatment, general city management, tourism and culture.
As members of the Hungarian delegation, the Director and the Chairman of the Board of Budapest Waterworks held negotiations with the Director of Water Supply State Enterprise of Vientiane Capital, the Director of Public Works and Transportation Department as well as the Water Management Development Institute about concrete project-based cooperation.
